I have never tried putting plants in with them, they might be fine with some really large ones like a huge Amazon sword, but I would not recommend trying, they will be gone quickly.The only cichlids that really go well with plants are ram and anglefish.

In nature, feeding is by scraping the algae covered (Aufwuchs) rock surfaces, and in the aquarium it is not a problem as all flake food is accepted, but it should be supplemented with a plant based formula containing something like spirulina.
