Coal is in decline, but not fast enough. It continues to fuel climate change, supercharge extreme weather, poison our air and consume precious fresh water. We can be the generation that ends the age of coal. We can have 100% sustainable renewable energy, giving us the power we need without hurting us, our children or our planet.

A Greenpeace report revealed that India’s government continued to build coal-fired power plants in areas facing water stress, worsening the crisis. Likewise in coal-rich northern China, massive coal bases are sucking up precious water resources, and nearby residents have reported wells running dry.

Coal still powers the world – around a third of global electricity is coal generated.It’s cheap and plentiful, but it comes with a cost. When burnt, it releases more carbon dioxide than oil or gas, so it’s a big problem when it comes to climate change.Coal also produces toxic elements like mercury and arsenic, and small particles of soot which contribute to air pollution.

Greenpeace Southeast Asia and Greenpeace Japan analysis found from the modeling: Japanese-financed coal power plants overseas emit, up to 13 times more nitrogen oxides (NO x), 33 times more sulfur dioxide (SO 2) and 40 times more dust pollution than those plants built in Japan.
